Rhonda Garica Biography
A South Texas native, Rhonda Garcia has been breaking musical boundaries since her middle school days in McAllen, Texas. She began her musical career playing the viola in her school orchestra program. At the age of 16, she was one of only two students chosen from Texas to perform with the National Youth Symphony at the Music Educator's National Convention in New Orleans. Upon graduation from high school in 1993, she moved to San Antonio and joined Mariachi Campanas de America, becoming the first official female member in their 17-year history and joining the ranks of chosen few who have broken the barriers of the male-dominated nationally recognized groups.
As a member of Campanas de America, Rhonda performed with a "who's who" in the mariachi industry including Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Mariachi Cobre, Sol de Mexico, and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. During her tenure, she worked with some of the biggest names in Latino music including Celia Cruz, Aida Cuevas, Vicente and Alejandro Fernandez, Lucha Villa, Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Rhonda has performed in such venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. In 1998, Rhonda Garcia joined Mariachi Los Caporales, becoming the group's first female as well.
As a recording artist, Rhonda Garcia has four albums to her credit, including two with Campanas de America and two with Mariachi Los Caporales. She has also recorded violin and vocals on a multitude of albums by artists including Veronica Castro, Conjunto Primavera, and Tejano stars such as Ruben Ramos, Elida y Avante, and Michael Salgado.
Most recently, Rhonda Garcia has performed as a featured soloist in various Mariachi Festivals including the L.A. County Fair, Ford Salute To Education Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza, Mariachi USA Festival at the Hollywood Bowl and Las Vegas' first ever Mariachi show on the strip "Mariachi M Passion and Tradition" at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino.
Not only is Garcia an accomplished musician and vocalist, she has also excelled in the field of Television commercials, jingles and voiceovers to include Don Pablo's Mexican Restaurant, Suave, Motts, IRS, Verizon Wireless, and Maseca.
In the area of education, Rhonda has excelled as a music teacher. She has taught Mariachi music in the San Antonio Independent School District at Rhodes Middle School, Highlands High School and most notably, Irving Middle School. Rhonda is currently teaching and pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications.
